Latest News.W hilst scenery and aircraft are the mainstay of flight simulator add-ons since the very beginning, products that enhance the sky are seeing a surge in popularity. Considering that most of flying is, in fact, done in the sky, this comes as no surprise. Active Sky Cloud Art ASCA is one such product from HiFi Technologies - the same company that made the highly popular Active Sky weather engine that injects real-time weather into your flight simulator - and is advertised to provide a visually appealing experience whilst having minimal performance sacrifices.
So, what is ASCA? However, its uniqueness arises from its ability to not only enhance existing cloud textures but also to add entirely new "cloud scenes" and "cloud structures" in order to provide a more realistic experience whilst flying. Despite the amazing visuals that ASCA provides though, it's still a performance-oriented product. HiFi Technologies did not merely throw in a bunch of HD textures and call it a day, but instead created eight different texture sets for a total of textures so as to vary the quality of textures in order to improve performance.
For example, ASCA uses lower resolution textures for overcast layers to improve performance within the simulator as the visual impact of such a decision is calculated to be rather insignificant. Booting up ASCA, you'll be greeted with the screen below. ASCA works based on the concept of "themes", where each theme has a different sky color, cloud texture and cirrus cloud appearance.
If you own Active Sky or Active Sky for P3Dv4, you'll be able to utilize additional options such as "Full Dynamics" or "Global Automatic", both of which automatically regulate sky colors and cirrus appearance, though "Full Dynamics" lacks automatic cloud texture control. These options will provide a much more realistic flying experience as the program will be able to fully adjust the textures based on the current weather.
The resolution of textures can be selected in the settings menu, going as high as x for the normal download, or, should you have the desire, up to x with an HD content pack. Additional features include the options for how much of ASCA is enabled as well as various simulator settings such as choosing which simulator to inject weather into.
Loading up the simulator, there is quite an obvious difference before and after installing ASCA. The same settings were used in both tests and cloud coverage was set to maximum. Pay particular attention to how ASCA creates clouds that are more defined whilst making the sky a more vibrant shade of blue. As evident from the pictures, ASCA provides a marked improvement in cloud textures and structures over that of default P3D. Due to limitations of my computer system, I was unable to fully test the HD textures in x resolution.
Nonetheless, from the results above, there should be no doubt that ASCA will provide more realistic sky textures. Performance wise, ASCA performs admirably as well. Despite the high-quality cloud models and textures, I didn't notice significant lowering of frame rates at all. In fact, I daresay that on higher end systems, there will be no decrease at all arising from the use of ASCA.
However, whilst ASCA provides a welcome facelift to the skies over default P3D textures, I feel that its textures and models are no better than that of the competition. Whilst something as ambiguous as the likability of cloud textures is really up to the individual, I do feel that REX does offer more options when it comes to injecting various clouds in to your simulator.
Especially when considering its price tag, offerings from Rex Game Studios are a compelling option indeed. My phone is not real good with encrypted e-mails, and this one was no different. It took me a few tries to get it open, but eventually it worked.
And yes, it's 31 degrees here and light snow! April Took an early morning flight out of San Diego to get back to Detroit.I just upgraded from 4. I'm somewhat surprised that 4.
For some reason the scenery files look a lot better, and so far I have held off installing any add on textures. I kind of like not adding all these huge programs.
HiFi Technologies - Active Sky for P3D V4 - UPGRADE
I always set my own weather, and I kind of think just using the P3d weather settings works pretty well for me. I would like to use some Cloud program though to sort of spice my clouds up a little. Any comment or advice is appreciated. If you don't want to run any of the REX addons for clouds, etc, you might want to look at the many free cloud texture downloads from the AVSIM library.

New Cirrus. New Cumulus. New Sun Flares. New Sky Textures. Aurora Borealis. New Airport Textures. En voir plus. Show user manual. For years and years, weather within the Flight Simulation world had always been one of the most unrealistic aspects of exploring the virtual world. FS Global Weather, Opus, REX and of course Active Sky have all been seen to be the main players when it comes to weather engines, all offering something slightly different.
HiFi Simulations have been developing weather engines for years now, and with each release, we see a new level of realism added, a new interface and of course, many new features aimed to be a new standard in our world. When Hifi introduced Active Sky Evolution, they introduced textures, to try to give users the best available textures for that weather condition.
With Active Sky Next, they focused on the basics and developed a revolutionary new weather engine, enabling developers like PMDG to make a fully functional weather radar for the first time. Fast forward toand just weeks before the launch, HiFi gave us a trailer, peeking into the future they had prepared for us. As you can imagine, this went down like a storm [pun most definitely intended]. Luckily, HiFi have worked tirelessly to provide the best experience possible within flight simulation.
For once, not just clouds transition smoothly, but now everything from wind, temperature and visibility change seamlessly. I finally feel like a weather engine provides a realistic approach to change.
Speaking of immersion, the way clouds are rendered has drastically improved for Active Sky Not only is performance drastically improved over ASN, but now you have a sense of motion as you fly through the clouds. Your speed and angle of attack will determine the effects of the clouds, but this level of detail gives you reason to spend your time cloud surfing. Be careful though, as turbulence has been improved upon, meaning you need to ensure you fly your aircraft safely and carefully through storms now, otherwise you could face catastrophic events.
The real value, however, is when you include it with AS For the first time in Flight Simulation, we finally have fully dynamic texture loading, all happening in real-time. It sounds like technical jargon to impress, but let me explain why this is the best feature and reason to buy the 2 products. Before, you would load up a pre-set group of textures, which would cover everything from sky colours to the texture of the clouds.
Because of this, regardless of the weather conditions, you would always have the same texture set, meaning if it was grey and rainy for departure, and sunny and hot when you arrived, then your texture sets will not match up with the atmospheric conditions outside. However, what HiFi have done is create a system where the textures will always match the weather conditions of where you are.
Whether this is your destination airport, or en-route, your textures will dynamically load from the ASCA bank into the sim, without so much of a hesitation. Despite how fantastic this all sounds, it does come at a cost — a literal cost: your hard earned cash. Right now, there is nothing better, to provide you with the most immersive weather experience possible. There are so many different options to play with to ensure you have both a realistic looking weather system, as well as desirable performance.
The author Calum Martin. I have the knowledge and experience to really deliver an excellent aviation community.
A primary design focus for ASCA was performance. From solid overcast, to towering cumulonimbus, everything was designed for the best visuals with minimal performance sacrifice. Careful 3D modeling of cloud structures and textures enables this, while creating realistic and unique variants of the real-world cloud types including stratus, nimbostratus, altocumulus, altostratus, cumulus humilis, cumulus mediocris, cumulus congestus, towering cumulus, stratocumulus, cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, cumulonimbus incus, cumulonimbus calvus and more.
Also included is SP1 which brings brand new softer cloud textures, a new cirrus set, revamped original cloud and sky textures, new natural sky color sets, new integration and API capability, improved overall resolution, improved overcast depiction, new geographic wx-influence profiles, and several new UI features including new options, plus more! In addition now ASCA SP1 includes additional newly improved overcast models, 6 new soft-style cloud texture sets, 7 new hyper-natural sky color sets with improved high-altitude saturation, vibrance and brightness graduation, a new cirrus cloud set, reworked and improved original cloud sets and sky color textures, remapping of all associations and definitions, new UI-based weather influenced configuration, and a new Art Tools API are just a few things that have been added in ASCA SP1.
Improved overall resolution, better dynamics, new geographic selection influence, and more user options are also included. Currently, Sky Color textures are supported, and more categories are planned to be added soon. Get only the looks you want! You have full flexibility to mix and match any aspect and selectable feature set within these add-ons.
Requires an online internet connection for normal usage. Online activation is mandatory. Moving software to another computer will deactivate the previous computer.
Multiple-computer installations will require an individual ASCA license for each computer that it is installed on. Recommended system requirements: 3.
