The tiller originally came with a Tecumseh 8hp HH80 engine with horizontal counter-rotating shafts. Tecumseh is out of business and rebuild kits are nonexistent. Anyone completed such an upgrade or have an engine website with specs?

Reviews of Ariens Rototillers

Received 2 Votes on 2 Posts. I have one of the old Garden Way Horse tillers that threw a rod, so I was faced with similar issue. A local power equipment repair place was able to find a Kohler kit made to fit one of their engines to the tiller. So if you have a local Ariens dealer that's been around for a while, might be worth asking them if they know of a suitable engine or kit.

The engine and kit cost me more than a new crappy tiller would have, but that horse is built like a wella horse. Find all posts by CarbideTipped. Received 10 Votes on 10 Posts.

Small Engine Warehouse has a re-power section. Link below. Have a good one.Despite being equipped with the same engine, two different models of Ariens tillers have extremely different capabilities by virtue of their designs.

The lightweight front-tine model can dig a wide path but suffers in terms of bite and stability in comparison to the beefier rear-tine model. The more substantial rear-tine model costs more. The Ariens front-tine tiller is a light-duty cultivator with an adjustable tilling width and a five-position depth adjustment.

It is equipped with a cc four-cycle Subaru engine that delivers 6 horsepower. The engine turns the tiller's inch tines at rpm through a chain drive system, and it features a basic recoil starting system. The tiller weighs pounds, and its overall width is 25 inches. The Ariens rear-tine tiller is designed to take on bigger jobs than its front-tine sibling. It is powered by the same cc Subaru engine as the front-tine tiller, but its tines turn at a faster rpm.

It also offers a reverse gear, unlike the front-tine tiller, which can only move forward. It rides on inch tires, as opposed to the front-tine tillers 8-inch wheels, so it is better able to handle rough terrain. Compared to the front-tine tiller, the rear-tine tiller is relatively massive at pounds, but its powered drive wheels help to make up for its extra weight.

The tilling width of the front-tine tiller is adjustable in increments so it can cultivate a path that's either 12, 22 or 24 inches wide. The front-tine tiller features forward-rotating tines, meaning the tines turn in the same direction that the tiller is moving. Forward-rotating tines don't dig into the soil as aggressively as counter-rotating tines, which rotate in the opposite direction of the tiller's travel, and forward-rotating tillers are not as stable during operation as counter-rotating tillers.

The Ariens rear-tine tiller features dual-rotating tines that can switch between forward and counter rotation. While the front-tine tiller is able to cultivate loose, lightweight soils, the rear-tine tiller's counter-rotation mode makes it suitable for dense, packed soils, as well. In my opinion, this is the classic series! The 10, series can be considered the second series of Sno-Thro's, after the "first series" of These three features are an easy way to identify a 10, series machine, and these are the three main features that are different from the "first series" of - Click here to compare these features with the earlier "first series".

More details on these three features:. The new "full teardrop" bucket shape. The earlier "half teardrop with side-shields" evolved into this new "full teardrop" bucket inwhere the previous "side shields" were simply incorporated into the solid sides of the new "full" bucket. Seperate levers on the side of the tractor body. Another spotting feature of the 10, series, to differentiate it from the "first series" is that it now has two control levers on the right side of the tractor body.

The "Sno-Thro clutch" lever, to turn the augers on and off, the right lever in the photo below and the "Tractor Clutch" lever to engage or disengage the transmission, left lever in the photo below. This is a new and important safety feature, which continues to today.

The new "square chute" style is also introduced with the 10, series in Quite a different chute style from the earlier "round chute".

The "attachment line" was also given a new name, and an expanded product line, with the introduction of the 10, series.

The old attachment line was the "Gard-N-Yard" line, available as a few attachments with the and "first series" snowblowers. With the 10, series in came the new "Trak-Team" line, which would develop into many available attachments. Many people have these models and are still happily using them today! Some more 10, series spotting features: thanks to Bob W. Here is the diagram from the Owners manual, of a Model 10M4.

And here is what is most likely a model 10M6! First year of the 10, series. This Sno-Thro is owned by Duane H.

Dotnet test runsettings

The tractor tag is missing, so we cant confirm the model number with absolute certainty, but there are several clues that indicate this machine is very likely a model 10M6. The engine is likely the original, it is 6hp, and the serial number is More important is the scoop tag! Serial numbers by year are well documented for the M scoop, and that serial pegs it as production.

With those two serial numbers, we can be very certain this is a machine. The chome handlebars are likely original, even for a "non-D" model, because Ariens usually only painted white handlebars on the lowest hp model of a given year, so its likely the 10M6 and the 10M6D both had chrome handlebars, and only the 10M4 had the white handlebars that year.

Here we have a niceowned by "Peco" from the gardenweb toolshed forumthanks Peco! This is a 5HP machine, and thanks to the serial number and the Ariens model sheetwe can pinpoint this machine exactly to the model year. Peco's machine also has a Sno-Thro attachment number: model M, serial Peco's machine has a newer replacement engine, which is fairly common for machines of this vintage.

These are features Tecumseh did not use until the early 's. Here is another model, this one a 6HP 10M6D model. John from Rhode Island bought it in rough condition, and fully fixed it up! John says:. So we took the hour ride and picked it up. I must say it was a mess in my book and I had my doubts. You can e-mail us directly at sales smallenginewarehouse.
